Project Overview
The Hawkesdale Wind Farm is a utility-scale renewable energy development located in Victoria’s south-west, around 230 km from Melbourne. Developed by Global Power Generation and delivered by BMD Constructions, the project includes 23 Vestas turbines with a combined capacity of 96.6MW—enough to power around 67,000 homes each year.
Outright Surveying was engaged by BMD to deliver comprehensive surveying services throughout the full four-year project cycle (2020–2024). Our scope covered everything from the initial feature survey to detailed design volume calculations, full construction setout, project survey management, and final as-constructed documentation.
Site Challenges
Surveying a site of this scale—over 2,280 hectares—brought several logistical and technical challenges. The wind farm spanned open farmland across multiple properties, with 23 turbine locations, 19 km of new access roads, underground cabling, and a substation.
Working across remote terrain meant long travel distances, variable weather, and ongoing coordination with other contractors. It was essential to establish a high-accuracy control network from the outset and manage survey logistics carefully to keep up with the construction pace.
Our Approach
Outright Surveying delivered end-to-end support for the entire wind farm, ensuring accurate setout, consistent data, and smooth coordination between stakeholders.
We provided:
- A full feature and level survey to map existing site conditions and establish base data for civil design
- Precise earthwork volume calculations to support efficient cut-and-fill planning
- Construction setout for all major components, including turbine foundations, crane pads, roads, and cable trenches
- Ongoing project survey management to maintain accuracy, control, and data handover across every stage
- Final as-constructed surveys to confirm asset locations, provide compliance documentation, and supply GIS/CAD-ready records
Our team used a combination of traditional field techniques, GNSS control, and drone photogrammetry to efficiently cover large areas without compromising precision.
Results Delivered
Our surveying enabled precise construction across the entire site. All turbine foundations, access infrastructure, and electrical routes were set out and built to spec, helping BMD deliver the project on time and within scope.
In early 2024, Hawkesdale Wind Farm entered commercial operation—adding 96.6MW of clean energy to Victoria’s grid and offsetting an estimated 333,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually.
Outright Surveying’s contributions helped ensure this major renewable energy project was executed with the accuracy and confidence it deserved.
